FoldEDU STEM Programs in Australia
FoldEDU STEM Programs in Australia
We’re excited to bring FoldEDU’s programs to Australia in collaboration with founder Leon and the FoldEDU team.
FoldEDU’s core program, “The Art, Science & Engineering of Folding,” explores how a simple fold in a piece of paper shows up in real-world innovation — from satellites that unfold in space and shape-shifting architecture to life-saving medical tools, robotics, and clean energy solutions.
Each session is hands-on and designed to spark curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving.
What participants will do in each workshop
In every workshop, participants will:
- Discover real-world examples of folding in science and engineering
- Explore exciting fields such as space exploration, architecture, clean energy, life-saving science, and robotics
- Build a relevant hands-on origami model during the session
Program options
You can choose one workshop as a standalone session, or combine multiple workshops into a series.
- Book a live workshop: Origami World delivers sessions for schools, universities, councils, libraries, and community groups.
Workshop themes (choose your favourites)
Space Explorers — Where Origami Meets Engineering
Discover how origami helps solve aerospace challenges — like fitting large solar panels into small rockets.
Participants explore the Miura-ori fold (invented by Kōryō Miura) and see real-world examples such as Japan’s Space Flyer Unit and the IKAROS solar sail. Then they fold a space-themed model (for example, a flying rocket).
Shape-Shifting Structures — Where Origami Meets Architecture
Explore how folding helps engineers design buildings and structures that adapt and transform.
This workshop shares real-world examples such as foldable houses for disaster relief, mobile bridges, and energy-saving smart facades. Participants learn a foundational structural fold and create a model based on the Waterbomb Base.
Sustainable Energy — Where Origami Meets Clean Energy Innovation
See how origami principles can make clean energy tools more efficient and portable.
Participants explore examples such as foldable solar cells, wind turbines, and sun-powered water purifiers, then fold a model connected to turbine-inspired design (an origami fan).
Folding Life — Where Origami Meets Life-Saving Science
Learn how folding in nature — including in our DNA and brains — inspires life-saving medical innovation.
This workshop highlights examples such as foldable stents, tiny surgical tools, and DNA “boxes” designed to deliver medicine. Participants then fold a practical model such as a Pill Case.
Origami-Inspired Robots — Where Origami Meets Robotic Innovation
Explore how folding creates robots that are flexible, adaptable, and safer to interact with.
Participants learn about real-world examples such as soft robots for rescue, gentle robotic arms, and ingestible medical robots, then fold a model (a Springy Snake) to see how stored energy can create movement.
Who it’s for
These programs are suitable for:
- Primary and secondary school students
- University students
- Community groups interested in science, engineering, and architecture
No prior origami experience is needed — just a curious mind.
